Drug Allergies

doctor prescribing skin testing to test for drug allergies

A drug allergy is an adverse reaction elicited by a drug. Penicillin allergy is the most common drug allergy reported by a patient. About 10% of patients report an allergy to Penicillin.

Other common drug allergies are cephalosporins, sulfonamides, and nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs.

How do we determine the next course of action?

  • Perform a thorough history
  • Review your previous health history and family history
  • Perform a thorough physical exam
  • If indicated, recommend allergy testing and a possible oral challenge

With these steps, we will be able to provide information on your drug allergies. We will be able to validate the nature of the drug allergy and if needed offer an alternative agent for your future needs.
